You know, with the way the bad goes in constant cycles around here, Wash is mildly surprised it hasn't overlapped before now.
It's as good a reason as any why it's taken this long to visit.
Naomi's nestled in her sling; a box under one arm and his cane in the other hand, Wash scrambles and juggles for a couple of seconds before he knocks on the door of the Tonks-Wrangle flat.
"Anybody home?" he calls.

And then she catches sight of the sling. Or, more specifically, its contents.
It's about this time that all the witch's verbal accuity leaves the building. But her reaction to Naomi can be summed up, for those of you following along at home, as 'EEEEEEEEEEE.'

Date: 2006-07-07 12:00 am (UTC)He hefts the box higher, starting to smile.
"I come bearing gifts and your extremely distant granddaughter. Naomi, this is Dora. Tonks, Naomi."

"And..."
Gently, he eases Naomi out of the sling (she blinks inquiringly at this New Person nearby) and passes her to Tonks.

Date: 2006-07-07 12:14 am (UTC)She is so hopeless.
Grinning back up at Wash, she nods towards the sofa. "C'mon in, take a load off." The witch walks over to sit, crooning softly to Naomi all the while, and snaps her fingers absently in the direction of the box. It obligingly follows.

"I would've come by sooner, but there was lots of crazy on our end, and apparently just as much if not more crazy on your end -- which, hence the gifts," he finishes, gesturing to the box as he flops onto the couch. "It's a couple things the crew got together for Bernard. How's he doing?"

Date: 2006-07-07 12:27 am (UTC)The box settles onto the coffee table, and she beams at Wash.
"That was so thoughtful of all of you! He'll be chuffed. Oh, and that reminds me--Accio gift!"
Tonks raises her hand, and after a moment a box shoots out of the hallway and onto the sofa.
"Little something in honour of the arrival."

Date: 2006-07-07 02:01 am (UTC)If something were going to go wrong, Wash would've known it by now, what with the blinking out of existence and everything. But Bernard is friend as well as family, and Wash is pretty well acquainted with what it's like to be cranky and bedridden.
He brightens and snatches up the second box, immediately getting to work opening it. "Ooh, gifts. Xiexie."

Date: 2006-07-07 02:06 am (UTC)"So what was your excitement?"
no subject
Date: 2006-07-07 02:17 am (UTC)He gently beeps her nose with it, and Naomi kicks her legs with a quiet, "Ah!"
Back to Tonks, with a decidedly wry twist to his mouth: "Well, uh. Mostly Simon and River getting hauled in by the feds and summarily hauled out again after a week."

Date: 2006-07-07 02:24 am (UTC)Her knee jogs gently, bouncing the baby just a bit, and Tonks blinks dazedly.
"Must've been a funky alignment of star...thingies, for everything to come crashing around our ears at once like that."
no subject
Date: 2006-07-07 02:28 am (UTC)An embarrassed and guilty hitch to the sentence as he glances at Naomi. He's been trying not to swear around the baby. Really.
" -- you'd think I would've seen something, maybe a tiny dancing glowing sign of impending doom, but nope."
no subject
Date: 2006-07-07 02:34 am (UTC)A sigh, and then she half-smiles.
"Kids're with my mum and dad for the afternoon, and I was just gonna head over to check on Bernard --don't suppose you'd like to come with? Know he'd love to meet the baby, and you could give him the box yourself..."
no subject
Date: 2006-07-07 02:38 am (UTC)He unlaces his hands and sits forward.
"Sure, I'd love to -- where's he staying? I just heard the part with the being hurt."

You know the 'EEEEEEEE' from earlier? It's his turn now.
"And I would be glad to distract -- " He doesn't quite jump to his feet, but he makes a good effort at it, grinning ear to ear. "Lead the way!"

Date: 2006-07-07 02:54 am (UTC)Nymphadora had dug up a sunhat of Anthony's for Naomi, and has the box tucked under her arm so that Wash can juggle the baby and cane more effectively.
"You've been to Earth before, right?"

Date: 2006-07-07 03:01 am (UTC)He tweaks the brim of Naomi's hat and whispers something in Chinese to her.

Date: 2006-07-07 03:04 am (UTC)She glances sidelong at Wash with his daughter, and a soft smile creeps over her face.
"So how's it going, for you and Zoe? With the whole new baby thing, I mean."

Date: 2006-07-07 03:21 am (UTC)Beat.
"Everybody else on the crew says thank you for the silencing charms, by the way."
no subject
Date: 2006-07-07 03:24 am (UTC)That's been more than a little tricky for Tonks herself.

Date: 2006-07-07 03:34 am (UTC)And not once did Wash ever doubt that she would; they both knew the risks and sacrifices going into this. It's a gesture that speaks volumes anyway.

Date: 2006-07-07 03:38 am (UTC)The hand that's not tucked around the box is shoved into her pocket, and Nymphadora walks along consideringly, directing Wash around the corner to the side street St. Mungo's is on.
"Had to do that a while back. Went to the House of Arch to stay. Hated it. But in the end I knew it was the only reasonable choice, and Bernard knew it too. So we dealt. Anyway. Glad you're doing all right with it, so far. And..."
She glances up to look Wash in the eye, dead serious.
"If you ever run into a spot where you need a safe place for Naomi to be for a bit, you know where we are."

Date: 2006-07-07 03:51 am (UTC)He's hoping things will get a little easier, with River and Simon no longer wanted fugitives -- ain't like they were easy before, but things took on a special brand of not-easy when the Tams boarded.
No way is he going to say that out loud and jinx it, though.
So instead he says, with full sincerity, "Thank you. I mean it. Knowing that is really, really good."

Date: 2006-07-08 12:16 am (UTC)'Dora reaches out to touch Wash's arm, slowing him to a stop.
"Here we are, then."
They're standing in front of an old, run-down department store -- Purge and Dowse -- the front window of which features an exceptionally ugly mannequin.
