flybywash: (dinnertime!)

The thing is, Wash isn't sleepy.

He's tired, sure, but that's just from the shock of going from there to here. Sleepiness? Not so much yet. It kind of makes sense, though, in a bizarre way. He wouldn't feel sleepy, not after that long...well. After.

His full strength may still be a ways off, but he's recuperated enough to stand on his own and navigate a ladder. So Wash presses a kiss to Zoe's hair, whispers that he needs some tea and he'll be right back, and slips out of bed.

A few minutes later, the kitchen smells faintly of chamomile.

"Too much like flowers," comes the drawled observation from just outside the kitchen door.

Jack Sparrow's leaning against the frame, black eyes sharp as he watches the other man. "Much more better if you put a spot of rum in, savvy?"

"Only a visit, mate. Came aboard yesterday, I think it was."

It's a little harder to tell time aboard Serenity than it is aboard the Pearl, or maybe it's just that he's not used to it.

A beat, and a quick flash of a gold tooth as he grins.

"Good to see you, mate."

"Don't suppose it would hurt to try it."

He moves with an odd grace as he straightens and steps into the kitchen, swaying slightly as though unconsciously feeling the movement of some impossible ocean. Black eyes gleam as he notes the rough texture of the bracelet on Wash's wrist, but he says nothing of it.

"If you'd be so kind."

"Thanks," he says, taking the tea -- although he can't help but give it a bit of a wryly mournful glance.

And then he looks up, catching Wash's eye.

"Glad to have you back, mate."

There's quiet in the kitchen for a minute or so, save for the ticks and pings of machinery, here and there.

"Shouldn't ask, should I?"

He's looking into the mug with every evidence of interest, but his quick sideways glance at the other man is watchful and wary.

"Not sure I do, savvy?"

He looks up, and the sudden gleam visible in his eyes is almost fey.

"And even if I do, I'm not inclined to make you go through it again just to satisfy me own ... curiosity." There's an odd twist to that last word, something distasteful to it.

"Some things a man doesn't want to think about, aye? That I know."

Everything about him is still, all of a sudden -- he's not even swaying with that inner rhythm, not now.

"Ah."

A beat.

"I'd hoped it'd help."

Sardonic humor paints his words as Jack informs him,

"Mate, I'm the last man ever to be scolding you about making a bargain to begin with, savvy? The trick's just to take what you want from it without having to give anything back."

Another beat, and then all humor's gone as he adds in a low voice,

"But you don't owe me for that." Jack nods at the bracelet, setting beaded braids to clattering as they swing.

"No worries there."

"Cards? I love cards!" Jack exclaims. "All proper-like."

There's a slightly confused hesitation, though, and then,

"Mate, we've already been introduced. Why would you be giving me one of your cards?"

Wash gets an odd look in return, followed by another set of pantomimes as Jack describes something much smaller.

"About this size, and the sort of cards what nobles and the like use to announce themselves when they go calling on each other, savvy?"

Jack's grin is utterly wicked as he adds,

"Sometimes they're even carried on a pretty silver tray."

There's something of manic, wild laughter about the look in the black eyes as he says,

"Funny you should say that, mate. Not a trading station exactly, though--"

Jack takes a swallow of tea, then makes a spectacularly unhappy face before he can stop himself.

"Still say it would be better with rum."

"Hasn't happened quite yet," Jack tells him with entirely too much wicked cheer. "You'll know when it does, aye."

"As for details... might be more better if you heard them from your own captain."

Jack looks startled for a moment, then grins devilishly back at him.

"Not sure I'd say it quite that way, notwithstanding the fact that it could be thought to be something what's as accurate as any other way of putting it, savvy?"

"Not my problem, now is it?" he tosses back swiftly.

"Especially as I don't think I'll be here then."

There's an instant's silence, and then--

"Seems the right thing to do," Jack says, easily enough. "The lot of you don't need a stranger around poking into things tonight, I'd wager. More comfortable without."

He flashes a quick grin.

"Besides, 's not like I won't be back, aye? Hard to do any piratical sorts of shenanigans and mischief otherwise."

Silence again for another moment, and then he grins back at the other man.

"Have to say I'm glad to hear it, mate."

The rough voice is quiet, but black eyes are gleaming with something very wryly amused as he nods toward the bracelet on Wash's wrist.

"Especially as I don't give a part of me own ship to just anyone, savvy?"

He nods again, seeing that Wash understands -- and then Jack grins suddenly.

"Suppose that means if I find you wandering 'round the Pearl after the next time you go gallivanting off for a few months, I'll know the reason for it, aye?"

"Good man. You'll like him."

"Aye."

Jack's grin is bright.

"We go way back. Showed up here not so very long ago -- don't know how long he'll be staying, but he's settled in again like nothing's changed."

"Mate, you'd be surprised just how many things can be bad luck when Gibbs sets to explaining it."

He shakes his head, sending beads rattling.

"And before one of them turns out to be a captain what's wandered off and left his ship too long -- I'd best be getting back, savvy?"
